4 Easy Ways To Veganize Any Recipe!
1.Learn to read through recipes with a vegan lens!
If you ever opened my Facebook or Twitter news feed, you’d be amazed at how many recipes (vegan or not!) appear in front of me at any given moment! Being a notorious food lover, I’m always open to learning new kitchen tricks and experimenting with different ingredients and cuisines from all over the world!
In order to veganize a recipe, you first have to look at the original! Recreating a recipe that contains animal products is not as difficult at it may sound.
The first step you need to take is to read through the recipe and circle all the animal products that need to be replaced with plant-based ingredients. Be sure to look out for any products that might seem ‘hidden’, such as gelatin, eggs, butter and honey.
2. Plant-Based Substitutions
This step might need some time to master. When you first go vegan it seems really hard to imagine what plant-based ingredients can be used to replace animal products. As you do more research, and experiment with different products, this process becomes very easy and you’ll even feel that you don’t even have to think about it anymore.
You just need some time to learn and adjust. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. And I cannot stress this enough, don’t be afraid to experiment!
After you have circled all the animal ingredients in your favorite recipe, start thinking what the best plant-based replacement would be. There are countless vegan articles that can help you with the substitution process but let’s go through some basic ideas:
- Replace chicken, beef or pork with tofu, seitan, jackfruit, mushrooms or legumes such as chickpeas and lentils.
- Substitute fish with tempeh or chickpeas.
- Swap eggs for aquafaba, flax seeds, chia seeds, bananas or avocados.
- Replace honey with maple syrup or date paste.
- Instead of butter use coconut oil.
- If the recipe requires milk, there is a wide range of plant-based milks you can use such as coconut milk, rice milk, soy milk and many, many more!
Your options are truly endless! You just need to spent some time to familiarize yourself with new ingredients. After a while, you’ll be a true expert and you will be able to veganize any recipe!
3.Texture and Flavor Matter!
Nobody wants you to create a recipe that would lack in texture and flavor! This is one of the biggest myths surrounding the vegan diet. You most certainly don’t have to sacrifice taste! After all we trying to get more people to adopt a vegan diet and we surely can’t do that with bland-tasting food!
Tender, juicy and crispy are not words that should be exiting your vocabulary. On the contrary! Texture and flavor are exactly what you ought to be trying to replicate! In order to veganize any recipe you should think about how to achieve the desirable texture and flavor.
First things first!
- Use lots of spices, herbs and aromatics.
- Marinate your plant-based ingredients so that they soak up all the flavors.
- Learn to make different sauces that would enhance the taste of your meal.
- Remember that you have to handle ingredients in different ways in order to differentiate between the end results. There are many cookbooks that will help you achieve the desirable outcome and even more online sources!
