What do vegans eat? This might sound like a silly question but I’m sure that if you are vegan, you’ve been asked this numerous times! And if you are not, I’m would imagine you’ve wondered about it.
Do you only eat salad every day? Really? Do I look like I’m on a lettuce and water diet? As much as I would love to take that as a compliment, my body doesn’t resemble that of a starving supermodel!
So, why do some people immediately assume that because one chooses not to consume products that are derived from animal cruelty, that they are starving themselves to death? Have we been so brainwashed by media that the idea of eating anything other than meat sounds abnormal?
Don’t get me wrong! I completely get where these questions are coming from as I’ve personally asked them in the past!
When I was transitioning to a vegan diet –at the age of 30- I didn’t have the tiniest clue about what a plant-based diet comprises of.
I was simply exposed to certain truths that I just couldn’t shake off. I couldn’t believe that I spend my whole life telling people I was an animal lover whilst eating a bucket of BBQ chicken wings. I had never made the connection and hadn’t realized the hypocrisy behind it up until that point.
My reasons for wanting to turn vegan were purely ethical but I still didn’t know how to go about it. When it first crosses your mind, it can be scary. No more grilled cheese sandwiches? Life without pizza must truly be hell!
I was never really a meat lover and had quit red meat at the age of 10 so I wasn’t really worried about eliminating meat from my diet altogether. Yet something about giving up dairy felt daunting.
Long story short, I started doing some serious research on different food sources and how to replicate different familiar flavors, and guess what! It wasn’t that hard! Much of what I was already eating was vegan. Apart from the obvious fruit and veg (which were a huge part of my diet as I was raised in a Mediterranean household), think about all the things everybody usually eats, like bread, pasta, rice, nuts, legumes. I was introduced to ingredients that I had never heard or used before like soy and tofu and learned about how these ingredients can be used to substitute meat and dairy products in practically any recipe your heart desires!
So, What do vegans eat anyway?
Love burgers? No problem! Vegan burgers made of chickpeas or soy mince are to die for!
Can’t give up your morning ritual of cereal and milk? No worries! Rice, soy or almond milk taste just as good and are also of high nutritional value.
Can’t imagine your life without chocolate? Yeah, I couldn’t either! But who told you, you couldn’t have any? The vegan market provides literally thousand of vegan products including candy bars, spreads, biscuits and cakes!

What I’m trying to get across is that there really isn’t anything that you love eating that you can’t have! You simply have to substitute animal products with plant-based products.You might require some help with that in the beginning, but hey! That’s what I’m here for!
